And You Thought Americans Texted too Much?

Go to any mall, movie theatre, subway station, or airport, and you’ll see dozens of people texting. With everyone clicking and clacking on their phones to no end, it seems as though everyone is hooked on texting. Even train engineers can’t get enough of it. As it turns out, Americans aren’t the texting champions we addicts we thought they were…
When PC World published an article listing the top four texting countries, I was shocked to find that the United States wasn’t on it. Who made the list?
- Phillipines (2.36 billion)
- Indonesia (1.193 billion)
- Malaysia (1.075 billion)
- Pakistan (763 million)
No reasons are mentioned for why texting is so popular in these Asian countries, but my guess is mobile providers there don’t charge the outrageous same notorious texting fees that the States are known for. Also keep in mind that far fewer people in these locales own computers, so instant messaging isn’t an option. Many consumers in developing countries use calling cards instead of subscription plans, and texting is probably a much cheaper alternative than using air time.
