Corsair’s Voyager Port: World’s Biggest Waste of Money

November 01, 09 by Daniel Foster

Ever wanted to use your tiny USB flash drive to backup important data? Don’t mind paying $30 for a device that provides functionality obtainable for free elsewhere? If so, then set sail for your nearest Best Buy and pick up a Corsair Voyager Port.

Released earlier this year, the Voyager Port lets any thumb drive be used to create one-touch backups. It retails for $30- $40 and comes with NovaBackup, a popular backup utility. The problem is, Corsair’s new device is simply nothing more than a waste of space and money.

Who would trust a USB drive– those tiny things you always lose and find later in the washing machine– with their critical data? While flash memory is more reliable than any hard drive, it is more expensive and only available in small capacities. For the $100+ it takes to buy a no-name 64 GB drive plus the $30 minimum for the Voyager Port, you could buy an external hard drive that holds nearly 10 times as much.

Corsair’s product doesn’t seem to do much of anything. There is already free software out there what will manage backups on a USB drive. Since it’s made out of plastic, the Voyager Port isn’t even heavy enough to be used as a paperweight! It does look pretty enough, though.
