Microsoft to Acquire MobiComp
February 15, 09 by Calandra LeslieMicrosoft announced recently its plans to acquire the Portugal based company MobiComp and will become part of Microsoft’s Mobile Communications Business division. The plan is to use MobiComp to bolster a number of services on the Windows Mobile smartphone platform as well as the Windows Live Web services division.
MobiComp is best known for working with companies to back up data stored on mobile phones, submitting content from mobile phones to social networks, and access news and other mobile media. They have work with some big hitters in the mobile phone world including
MobiComp offers three products that will presumably be added to Windows Live Web Services. They include the Active MTicker, MobileKeeper Backup & Restore, and MobileKeeper Suite.
The Active MTicker is an application that pushes personalized information at subscribers via an always-on, scrolling ticker that runs along the bottom of the screen when the device is in idle mode.
MobileKeeper Backup & Restore copies and stores automatically all or part of the mobile device’s contents onto a secure server, and recovers mobile data from the server and installs all content, settings, information and applications onto a mobile device. It protects any kind of content held on a mobile device: including text messages, multi media messages, contacts and videos. All of which can be useful if Microsoft is planning on enhancing its mobile integrated services in the near future.
The MobileKeeper Suite is a combination of both services mentioned above and also focuses on integration with users. It offers a platform where users can create, share and download content, while building their personal communities and networks or publish content direct to blogs and social networking sites such as Flickr and Hi5 while using their mobile device.
With the quickly rising use of 3G networks in the mobile industry in the U.S. it looks like Microsoft could be on to something by using European companies like MobiComp to enhance their services. This will be Microsoft’s biggest investment to date in Portugal, but no financial details have been released as of yet.
