Samsung is trying to get a bigger jump on the mp3 market with their YP-S2 models being touted as the player for those of us on the go. The device which is according to Samsung is small like a pebble and can be worn like a pendant around the neck.

The player which has dimensions of 1.66″(w) x 0.65″(h) x 1.62″(d) and is lightweight (0.03 lbs) is something the probably is more likely to be appreciated by people who are into appearances than functions. It comes in five colors: black, white, red, green and purple, and comes in 1GB (z model) and 2GB (q model).

It plays only 3 music formats: MP3, WMA, OGG and has no screen to even see what exactly is playing. It is also missing a lot of features that we have come to know and love on most portable media players.

As far as hearing your music the way you want it, it does have a mobile play list, but is missing file information. There is no file navigation either. It does have the standard playback options such as play/pause, volume and also a little LED light with various patterns depending on which playback selection you select (standard, random, repeat).

It does not have a radio, so those of you who like to listen to the radio can forget about this model. There is no alarm, or even text and picture viewing. What you have here is a basic bare bones player that can be worn around the neck.

The good thing about it is the price. On Amazon is sells for $39.99.

So what is this player for? This player can be useful if you like to listen to music while you are running, or at the gym. It could also be a great gift for children who are too young to know better and like to listen to their Hanna Montana songs and you do not want to hear them on family vacations. It also could be good for those people in your life who are just not tech savvy, have a hard time with anything electronic, and are still using those portable CD players.

Otherwise I would just forget about this one. The only thing that comes to mind when I think of it is: “Hello, the late 90′s have called and would like their MP3 player back.”
