Apple did update their remote. It's called Remote, and it's a free download on the App Store.

Seriously, aluminum remotes? With Apple charging $20 a pop for these cheap plastic ones, how much will they justify for an aluminum one? But, if you didn't already know, Apple is phasing out the Apple Remote. As of March 2009, no Apple computer ships with an Apple Remote. The only device to do so is the Apple TV.

Apple is definitely a progressive company in today's market. I think the only reason that the Apple remote hasn't gotten a "makeover" is because the priority of it's dependency on the company's future is not very high. Because Apple is spending a lot of it's researching power on mobile (iPod & iPhone) and laptops (Air, ect) which provide a much stronger income source, there probably isn't a strong chance that they actually will update the Apple remote. Nonetheless, that isn't to say that Apple hasn't pulled out great surprises for us - You never know...
